Marriage is Not Designed for Your Feelings

Marriage is not designed for your feelings. Marriage is bigger than us…. and our feelings. God ordained marriage for His purpose: (1) To reflect His own image, (2) To procreate children to be His disciples, and (3) To withstand the spiritual battle.

To reflect His own image:

Jesus is to the church what husbands are to be to their own wife – the head. Jesus leads and loves the church, just as husbands are instructed to lead and love their own wife. Marriage is meant to reflect God’s relationship with and love for the church.

To procreate children to be His disciples:

Scripture encourages us to be fruitful and multiply, to fill the earth. The point is not to simply fill the earth with more humans; rather, the point is to fill the earth with more followers of Christ. Followers of Christ will lead others to follow Him as well.

To withstand the spiritual battle:

The struggles and evil that we face in this world are far greater than their face value appearance. Our fight is not really against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, authorities, powers, and spiritual forces of this dark world. In a marriage, the husband and wife are meant to unite as one and fight their common enemy – the devil, who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy what is good. Anything or any person that is of God is good; this is what the enemy intends to destroy by any means necessary.

Marriage is not designed for your feelings. God’s purpose for marriage is bigger than us and our feelings. You should not get married to make yourself feel happy nor to erase your feelings of loneliness. YOU are the only person who has the power and responsibility to make YOU feel happy. One other thing – you can absolutely be married and still feel lonely at times.

Once you’ve concluded on your own (through prayer and research) that marriage is not all about you, let us move on to my next point: Marriage is sacred and binding, no matter the circumstance.
