Good Home Practice: What’s In Your Fridge

Updated: Sep 14, 2020

In this video blog, I am sharing how I like to clean and disinfect my refrigerator in 6 simple steps before an upcoming grocery shopping trip. Cleaning your refrigerator before each shopping trip will help you to maintain a fresh and clean fridge, have a better idea of what items to add to your grocery list, and dispose of old foods and beverages before they spoil. If you’re not already doing so, I encourage you to adopt this as your new good home practice.

Step 1: Empty Your Fridge of all items.

Step 2: Use a Cleaning Solution to Wipe Down All Areas. I use a simple vinegar and water mix, for safe cleaning. Be sure to clean all compartments. To deep clean your compartments, remove and soak them in hot, soapy water before cleaning.

Step 3: Use Disinfectant Spray or Wipes to Clean Outer Surfaces. This includes all of the cracks and crevices, the surrounding walls inside your fridge, as well as the outside of your fridge. Give special effort to that door handle!

Step 4: Use Stainless Steel Cleaner for a Streak-Free Shine. If you have a stainless steel fridge, you’ll want to invest in this for sure to keep the outside of your fridge clean and shining.

Step 5: Clean Any Added Storage Bins That You Use. Adding additional fridge and freezer bins to sort and store your items is another good practice. If you’re not sure what I mean, I’ll explain in a separate blog.

Step 6: Add Unexpired Food and Beverages Back to The Fridge. Be sure to check all expiration dates instead of just assuming that the item is still good.

Now, you’re ready to head to the grocery store. Don‘t forget your grocery list!
